The problem

The problem

When we were contacted by the Municipality of Nieuwerkerken to solve an acoustic problem in the local kindergarten, it was much needed. After all, good acoustics are very important for the well-being of both teachers and children (see also our blog on acoustics in schools). Apparently, two large classrooms had very poor acoustics. They wanted to get rid of this fast and well.

Our solution

Our solution

These were the classes of teacher Leslie and teacher Femke. In Miss Leslie's classroom, a reverberation time of 1.2 seconds was observed. In this classroom there is a mezzanine, and thus a high ceiling. Sound gets free rein, which creates an unhealthy situation for both the teacher and the nearly 20 preschoolers who are present every day. We installed an acoustic ceiling panel (COUSTceiling) both above and below the mezzanine, and also placed an acoustic wall panel (COUSTpanel) on the wall at the stairs. In the end, this allowed us to easily reduce the reverberation to 0.8 seconds.

Result

Result

If the reverberation in the first class seemed bad to us, however, the reverberation in Teacher Femke's class was even worse. Again, this was a large classroom with high ceilings, which housed the very young. Here we worked with three large acoustic wall panels (COUSTpanels) of up to 6 m² each to sufficiently absorb the noise. The client deliberately chose not to use prints but sober, calm solid-colored canvases. After all, the many drawings and works of art by the children gave more than enough color to the room. In this way we improved the acoustics in this school in an aesthetically responsible way, with attention to the client's wishes. Another project to be proud of.
